What is Authenticity Coaching™?
Authenticity Coaching™ aids people in the fulfillment of their own joy. This process guides you towards your flourishing through the authoring of your own life.
The word authentic comes from the word author. Leading an authentic life means authoring your own story. Scripts and story-lines (familial and cultural) will guide your life unless you become present to them. When can see, and then "drop the script", as my advisor encouraged me to do at age 18, life and mystery rises to meet you in the most delicious, silly, and uncanny ways.
Through my doctoral work in conflict resolution, extensive coach training, and deep spiritual inquiry, I developed an integrated approach that now supports the most traumatized (returning soldiers, holocaust survivors) to those simply dealing with the complexities of life (divorce, loss of purpose, the search for love, financial panic, existential angst) in this process of "script dropping." I even do this work with companies.
The results have been incredible--I am delighted by how much more fulfillment and joy people can experience when they are more fully authoring their own lives.
Why have a coach?
In a world filled with story-lines, cultural norms, and the chatter of our upbringing in our head, it's almost impossible to sort out one's authenticity alone. The story-lines will either pull you back or leave you feeling "wrong." In his article, "Why Study People's Stories" Arthur Frank says you develop your authenticity through dialog and in communication. I find effective dialogue combined with meditation and spiritual practice creates an astonishing combination.
How can Authenticity Coaching Serve You?
Wild strawberries just taste differently when you are living an authentic experience. You will have more energy, give more easily, love more openly, and laugh so much more. Your relationships will improve, better people will show up, opportunities will kind of dance into your lap.
How do you do this?
You are going to have to drop the script.
No more borrowing lines or roles of others.
Instead, you will have to lean into enchantment, wobble on the diving board, and give up perfection. It's a fun process, though admittedly at times you might feel a bit nauseated. It's part of the cleansing, but sometimes feels as if you have swallowed characters that are not you and they need to find their way out.
How does Authenticity Coaching work?
You will begin to see the parts you have been playing "the good spouse," "dutiful employee," "the wild one," or "the selfless giver." You will see the cultural, familial, and historical stories that have been pushing and guiding your decisions without your conscious awareness. Then, with this new awareness, consider what you want your story to be.
Living an "authentic life" does not arise from just changing one's career or going to Belize. It's a moment by moment process.
How do you know if you're being authentic?
Joe DiMaggio, M.D. says in-authenticity is any moment you hide what you truly love,it
He told a story about admitting to his Junior High Class how much he loved a particular Top 40 song, when the class did not share his enthusiasm he was ashamed and stopped listening to it.
